Cabrillo Music Theatre creates performs professional-level productions locally, and, when shows call for children, the talent from the community is overwhelming. But what to do to engage and inspire these young people between Cabrillo shows? In answer to this question, the KABRILLO KIDS were created! Formed from a half-dozen children in the summer of 2007, the program now boasts upward of 60 children between the ages of 8 and 14, all of whom must audition to become part of the group. Unlike other children's performing groups, there are no fees to participate in the Kabrillo Kids, and the performers are encouraged to further their education and experience with other groups, shows, and entertainments, and to bring that experience back to the Kabrillo Kids. Throughout the year, the Kids are taught songs and scenes, often to perform outside the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza before performances. Education is a key component, as the Kids are taught a variety of material and songs, learning various styles, and discovering great music of earlier eras. In addition to performances at the Civic Arts Plaza, the Kabrillo Kids play a leading role in our entertainment for the Military and Older Americans, allowing Cabrillo to share a fundamental education: the act of performance as giving. Our young people see the impact of their performances on these deserving audiences, and our Outreach programs are very fully attended by the Kabrillo Kids. All of our Kabrillo Kids are passionate about the arts, and one of our very first Kabrillo Kids, Veronica Dunne, is now the star of Disney Channel's "K.C. Undercover."
